All up and down the trellis, open for business,
blooming from sheer delight in the transubstantiation
of sun and water and dirt.
Also sex.

Getting it done.
May 25
They’ve got all summer now,
so you’d think
there’s no reason for hurry.
But they’ve each signed up for a very particular window.
Get it up, get it open, let it down, thank you ma’am.
It can be a dirty business,
leave you tired, arrayed in droopy fading splendor.
Unless you claim the ground that holds you, the air you breathe.
Unless you’re lemon balm
or peppermint
then nothing messes with you,
you’re locked on for perpetuity.
Last week’s front yard was wild and rich.
But when you live in the woods
you have to strike a deal with encroachment,
yours and the wood’s. Mark the edge.
Mowing machines make possible tick-free passage,
cut the blueberry bushes from the jungle,
and give perimeter plants a chance at light.
You can park a car, and find it in the morning.
Defend your pots and beds and plots from wild things.
Thanks, Huskvarna.
Update. The day after this picture, they were gone.
Fledged or lunch, depending.
From my porch …

One eye up and one eye down.
May 10
One day, as the stink bug watches,
is enough to blow up a bud.
Everything in such a hurry
to get it done,
whether in the pots
or among the herbs.
But meanwhile in the lawn
the marauder buttercups are special forces,
unchallenged they’ll hand off to
saw-briar and blackberry and locust.
The mower is ordered
which is a little sad for what it will take down
but a lot necessary for what it will allow to come up.
The little entities we favor
cannot stand against the native ferocity
always alert and ready to resume dominion.
They will have it back, and soon enough,
but we shall extend our moment here a little longer.
With all due respect.
